PracticalFishkeeping.co.uk píše:Study reveals new Betta species

Scientists who examined nine species of Betta from Thailand and Indonesia have revealed that Betta sp. "Mahachai" is a distinct species and have identified several other overlooked species.

The results came after scientists used a molecular technique to examine two regions of mitochondrial DNA from nine different species of Betta.

Based on the results of the molecular study and an analysis of the fishes' morphological features, the team confirmed that the currently undescribed Betta sp. "Mahachai" from central Thailand is a distinct species, not just a form of Betta splendens as some had suggested.

The results also demonstrated the probable existence of two overlooked Betta species from the Khorat plateau basin, and found that Betta smaragdina, appeared to contain three different lineages which might represent previously overlooked species.

Two regions of mitochondrial (mt) DNA, cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (COI) and 16S rRNA, were sequenced in nine species of Betta from Thailand and Indonesia. Most species showed little intraspecific COI variation (adjusted mean = 0·48%) including the putative species Betta sp. Mahachai, but one species (Betta smaragdina) included three lineages showing much greater divergence (7·03–13·48%) that probably represent overlooked species. These findings were confirmed by maximum likelihood analysis and Bayesian inference, which revealed well-supported corresponding monophyletic clades. Based on these results and morphological differences, the putative species Betta sp. Mahachai from central Thailand is a species distinct from other members of the B. splendens group and represents a new and hitherto undescribed species. Furthermore, this study also demonstrated the probable existence of two overlooked Betta species found in the Khorat plateau basin, illustrating the utility of mitochondrial genetic markers in the revelation of overlooked diversity.

Tak už je to ofiko, a budeme muset přejmenovat tuhle část fóra :-) Betta sp. "Mahachai" se nově jmenuje Betta mahachaiensis

Zootaxa 3522: 49–60 (2012) píše:Betta mahachaiensis, a new species of bubble-nesting fighting fish (Teleostei: Osphronemidae) from Samut Sakhon Province, Thailand

Abstract
Betta mahachaiensis, a new species of fighting fish belonging to the Betta splendens group, is described. The fish inhabits specifically sites with brackish water and nipa palms in the Samut Sakhon Province, Thailand. It is distinguishable from other members of the B. splendens group in having an iridescent green/bluish-green appearance on the brown-to-black body background. The opercular membrane has brown-to-black colour without red streaks or patches. The opercle has two parallel iridescent green or bluish-green vertical bars. Its dorsal, caudal, and anal fin rays are brown to black, contrasting with the iridescent green or bluish-green of the interradial membrane. Black transverse bars are present on at least the proximal twothirds of the dorsal fin, but not on the caudal fin. The colour of the pelvic fins is brown to black with an iridescent green/bluish-green front margin and a white tip. Females possess similar characters but are less colourful than males.

Key words: Betta mahachaiensis, Bubble-nesting fighting fish, Thailand
